If you’re familiar with Marshall’s Major series, you might already have an idea of what to expect from the Major V. But to stop there would be a disservice to these headphones, which blend the brand’s legendary design and sound into a modern package. Marshall has stayed true to its roots with the Major V, preserving the rugged, vintage aesthetic while subtly enhancing the experience for today’s listeners.
While, the headphones, at the price of Rs 14,900, look promising, there are certain things that they miss out on. For instance, they do not have Active Noise Cancellation or IP rating for added durability or listening convenience.
Having used the headphones for a while, here’s a detailed review:
Marshall Major V review: Design and comfort
The Major V features a vintage-inspired look resembling classic Marshall amplifiers and that has become a thing for Marshall products lately – be it headphones or speakers. And it is a good thing as why leave something that resonates well with the brand?
The headphones include a coiled 3.5mm cable for wired listening and a USB-C cable for charging but do not come with a carrying case. The headband is padded, and the faux leather earpads provide cushioning for extended use. The sliding metal bracket allows easy size adjustments, but the clamping force is weak, making it prone to shifting during movement.
Marshall Major V review: Controls and connectivity
The headphones come with a multidirectional gold control button on the right ear cup that manages playback, volume, and calls. Additionally, a customisable "M-button" on the left ear cup can be programmed via the Marshall Bluetooth app. The Major V supports Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, and LC3 codec compatibility. It also offers multipoint connectivity and a 3.5mm audio input/output, allowing users to share audio with another wired headphone. The connectivity options and controls are enough for most needs and the passive connectivity support is something that I expect and cherish in wireless headphones as it brings that added convenience.
Marshall Major V review: Sound quality
Major V comes with Marshall’s tried and tested sound signature – slightly treble-heavy but balanced on the other aspects by default. The drivers are capable and versatile as the sound signature can be customised using the app and 5-band EQ. While the default tuning may not be for everyone and can sound harsh a little at the highest volume, the ability to customise the sound signature can transform the sound output completely – to an extent that no one can imagine that the headphones have a treble-heavy profile.
Adjusting the EQ improves the listening experience, particularly for rock and metal genres. And, if you are a Bollywood music lover, then, it delivers a good overall listening experience. The headphones offer decent bass impact but require tuning to balance the sound signature.
The lack of ANC in Major V is something one can’t ignore. The sound isolation from the headphones is good, but it can never match the ANC. The passive isolation from thick earpads muffles ambient noise, it does not effectively block out loud environments. The built-in microphone performs well in quiet settings but struggles in noisy outdoor conditions.
Marshall Major V review: Battery life
Marshall claims over 100 hours of battery life. In real-world usage, it delivered around 90 hours of playback which is impressive and one of the best in the segment.
Also, a 15-minute charge provides 15 hours of playback. The headphones support wireless charging, but the lack of magnetic alignment makes it unreliable compared to wired charging.
Marshall Major V review: Verdict
Marshall Major V offers a stylish design, extensive battery life, and flexible connectivity options. However, its lack of ANC and treble-heavy default tuning may limit its appeal. If you are planning to buy one, do note that the cost is for that sound – which is extremely customisable – and the brand’s aesthetics.
