In Karnataka, lacklustre Congress performance casts a shadow on guarantee schemes

Some Congress legislators have asked for the guarantees to be reconsidered as they had not helped the party in the LS polls. However, the CM insists that the welfare schemes are not for political gain but a commitment to the people.

While Congress won 135 seats in the 224-member assembly in the 2023 polls, in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, Congress managed to win only nine out of a total of 28 seats.

June 11, 2024, marked one year of the Shakti scheme, which provides free bus travel for women in Karnataka. Women passengers in the state took 226 crore rides worth Rs 5,515 crore during the year.

Shakti is one of the five poll guarantees implemented by the Congress-led government and is the most popular scheme. According to Chief Minister (CM) Siddaramaiah,  the Shakti scheme has empowered women, increased the overall ridership of road transport corporations, and boosted economic activity.
