Facing mounting complaints over overheating and battery performance, Google has launched a Battery Performance Programme for Pixel 6a users, offering free battery replacements or compensation options. The move comes as the company attempts to address long-standing concerns about the device’s thermal and power efficiency.
“The battery replacement program provides one battery replacement at no charge for eligible Pixel 6a devices following an initial eligibility check and physical inspection of your device,” said Google.
As part of this initiative, Pixel 6a owners now have multiple options. They can either get their battery replaced at no cost through authorised service centres or opt for compensation. The payout comes in two forms: $100 (approx. Rs 8,500) in cash or $150 (around Rs 2,800) in Google Store credit, which can be used towards buying a new Pixel device.
However, cash payouts may not be available in all countries due to local regulations. Payments will be handled by third-party provider Payoneer, and users may be required to submit ID proof, like a PAN card in India or SSN in the US, depending on local rules.
To curb further issues, Google will also push a mandatory Android 16 update to all Pixel 6a units. The update is designed to optimise battery efficiency and reduce overheating—problems that have been widely reported by users since launch.
Eligibility for the programme can be checked on a dedicated page created by Google. Users need to submit the IMEI number of their device and the email address linked to it. If someone is applying on behalf of another user, Google may request additional verification.
Things to keep in mind
Google has made it clear that:
- If your Pixel 6a device exhibits other forms of damage, like liquid damage, exposure to sharp objects, or excessive force, it may not qualify for a battery replacement at no charge under this program.
- If your phone has out-of-warranty damage, such as display or cover glass cracks, then there may be a fee to repair your phone. “Before we start any repairs, we'll provide a cost estimate. You then have the option to proceed with the repair or have your device returned to you,” noted Google.
Google also said that payment and Google hardware discount code amounts may vary based on the daily exchange rate at the time of currency conversion. “Payments will be converted to your local currency and the final amount will be calculated using the exchange rate in effect at the time you select your support option,” said Google.
