Google has confirmed it is working on a fix for a significant bug that removed the media playback controls from Google Maps. The issue was first reported by 9to5Google and affected Android users who rely on the feature to control audio playback from apps like YouTube Music and Spotify while using turn-by-turn navigation.

What was the bug?
The bug caused the disappearance of media controls in Google Maps, which are typically visible at the bottom of the navigation screen. These controls allow users to play, pause, and skip songs without leaving the Maps interface. It also displays song details and includes a shortcut to open music apps like YouTube Music directly.

Users first noticed the issue in the stable Google Maps version 25.28 and the beta version 25.29. With no option to control media, many users reported disrupted driving experiences, especially those who rely on in-car infotainment systems.

Google’s response
In response to the growing reports, a Google spokesperson acknowledged the issue and called it a bug. “We are actively working to fix an issue that is affecting media playback controls on Google Maps,” the company said in a statement. While the timeline for a fix hasn’t been confirmed, the acknowledgement indicates that Google is prioritising a resolution.
