X is rolling out a Handle Marketplace for its Premium Plus and Premium Business subscribers, letting them claim inactive usernames. The company plans to divide handles into two categories: Priority and Rare.
Priority handles, which often include full names or multi-word phrases, will be available for free to eligible subscribers. But the real action will be in the Rare category, where handles could fetch anywhere from Rs 2 lakh to over Rs 8 crore, depending on their demand and uniqueness.
Unlike a one-time benefit, this feature will function as an ongoing paid service — another incentive for users to stick with premium plans. Once you secure a new handle, your old one will be frozen, and X is reportedly considering a paid redirect option in the future.
However, there’s a catch. Downgrade your subscription, and you lose the premium handle — your account automatically reverts to the original username.
The move signals Musk’s latest attempt to boost X’s subscription revenue and make premium tiers more desirable. But it also raises questions about the future of online identity — where even a username could become a status symbol with a steep price tag.
