ChatGPT could soon take control of Apple Music playlists on iPhone and Mac

ChatGPT may soon do more than answer questions on Apple devices. A new hint from OpenAI suggests the AI could be on its way to managing Apple Music playlists as well.

ChatGPT could soon gain the ability to interact with Apple Music, potentially letting users create and manage playlists directly through the AI on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The feature has not been formally announced, but it was quietly referenced in a recent post from OpenAI leadership.

In a Substack post published on Tuesday, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, outlined upcoming improvements to ChatGPT, starting with a new dedicated entry point for image generation. Tucked into the latter part of the post was a broader update on app integrations, where Apple Music appeared among a list of services set to join ChatGPT’s expanding app directory.

ChatGPT already supports a range of third-party apps, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. According to Simo, the next wave of integrations will include Apple Music, alongside tools from Adobe, Airtable, Clay, Lovable, OpenTable, Replit, and Salesforce. Developers will also be able to submit their own apps for review. The Apple Music integration, Simo wrote, is coming “soon”.

While OpenAI has not explained exactly what ChatGPT will do with Apple Music, there is a clear precedent. ChatGPT already integrates with Spotify, allowing users to generate personalised playlists through natural language prompts. Users can ask for music based on mood, activity, or existing playlists, with ChatGPT factoring in listening history and favourite artists before opening the playlist directly in Spotify.
