Canva has launched its first in-house design model that understands design layers and formats, allowing users to create editable, multi-layered designs instead of static images. The new model supports multiple content types, including social media posts, presentations, websites, and whiteboards, expanding Canva’s role as an all-in-one creative platform.
New design model and AI tools
The foundational model, trained on Canva’s proprietary design elements, can generate designs with individual layers and objects. This allows creators to edit and iterate their designs more intuitively.
Robert Kawalsky, Canva’s global head of product, said the company initially relied on diffusion models but saw a need for a system that better supported interactive editing. “People want the ability to start with a prompt and get far, but also be able to iterate directly themselves,” he explained.
Canva is also updating its AI assistant, now available throughout the platform — including design, elements, and comment sections. Users can tag the assistant in collaborative projects to generate text, images, or design suggestions. The assistant can also create 3D objects and replicate the style of existing designs.
Integration of data tools and new features
Canva’s spreadsheet and app-building tools are now linked, enabling users to create data visualizations or functional widgets using stored data. This integration supports workflows for marketing, analytics, and interactive presentations.
The company also introduced Canva Grow, a new AI-powered marketing platform that combines asset creation and ad performance tracking. This feature uses data from Canva’s acquisition of MagicBrief, offering direct publishing options for ads on platforms like Meta.
Additionally, Canva has added support for creating forms and designing emails directly within its platform, aiming to compete with tools like Google Forms and email marketing services.
Affinity integration
Following its acquisition of the Affinity suite, Canva announced that Affinity will now be free for all users. The professional toolset is being redesigned to merge vector, pixel, and layout features, with deeper integration allowing users to seamlessly move projects between Affinity and Canva.
