Destiny developer Bungie has delayed its upcoming first-person extraction shooter Marathon indefinitely, with no new release date or window. Marathon was scheduled for a September 23 release, but sadly, that’s not going to happen. However, the Prague-based developer has promised an update on Marathon this Fall, along with a new release date.
According to Bungie, user feedback from the Alpha playtest is the reason Marathon has been delayed, and the developers now need more time to work on and test new game features.
“Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We've taken this to heart, and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion. After much discussion within our Dev team, we’ve made the decision to delay the September 23rd release.”, Bungie said in a website post.
The Czech developer added that over the next few months, it will “continue closed testing (including participants from the Alpha) to deploy gameplay updates and test new features as they come online.”
Bungie’s immediate focus areas for Marathon will be:
- "More challenging and engaging AI encounters
- More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- Making combat more tense and strategic
- Increased visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
- A better player experience for solo/duos
- Prox chat, so social stories can come to life”
Players looking forward to the team-based extraction shooter will now have to wait until Fall for an update on the game. Hopefully, we’ll get the release date confirmed then. Marathon will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC (via Steam).
