Apple’s 2024 environmental progress report shows major reductions in carbon emissions and boost in renewable energy use

A big part of this progress comes from Apple’s global supply chain, which now uses 17.8 gigawatts of renewable electricity. In 2024 alone, this clean energy prevented 21.8 million metric tons of carbon emissions — a 17% jump from last year.

Apple is marking Earth Day this year with some big green wins. The tech giant announced it has now reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% since 2015 — a key step towards its goal of becoming completely carbon neutral by 2030.
In its latest Environmental Progress Report, Apple revealed that it’s not just cutting emissions, but also ramping up its use of recycled materials. Nearly all magnets in Apple products now use 99% recycled rare earth elements, and the batteries in Apple-designed products are made with 99% recycled cobalt.

Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said, “We’re using more clean energy and recycled materials than ever before, preserving water, preventing waste, and investing big in nature. The work is tough, but we’re meeting the challenge with innovation and urgency.”

Apple’s suppliers are also making cleaner chips and displays by cutting down emissions from industrial processes. So far, 26 semiconductor suppliers and 100% of display suppliers have committed to slashing harmful greenhouse gases by at least 90% by 2030.
