Anthropic has announced a major update to its Claude AI chatbot, introducing automatic memory for all paid users. The new feature, previously reserved for Team and Enterprise plans, allows Claude to remember details from past conversations — putting it on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in long-term recall capabilities.

The memory function first appeared earlier this year in a limited form, requiring users to explicitly ask Claude to remember specific information. In August, Anthropic enhanced it to automatically store relevant context from chats, though the feature remained restricted to higher-tier business accounts. With the latest rollout, both Claude Pro and Max subscribers will now gain access. Max users can enable it immediately, while Pro users will see it over the coming days.

Memory in Claude remains strictly opt-in. Users can activate it through settings and choose between two modes: “search and reference chats” and “generate memory from chat history.” Claude also provides an editable memory summary, letting users review, modify, or delete what the chatbot remembers.

Additionally, Anthropic has implemented project-specific memory separation. Each project within Claude will maintain its own memory profile, ensuring that personal and professional conversations stay distinct and contextually consistent.
