Amazon has confirmed another round of job cuts, this time within its flagship cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The exact number of layoffs hasn’t been disclosed, but the company acknowledged that “particular teams” across AWS were impacted following an internal review of priorities and operations, according to a report by Reuters.

One of the affected groups is AWS’ training and certification unit, according to an internal memo seen by CNBC. Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser said the decision was not made lightly, and that the company is committed to supporting employees through the transition.

Though Amazon insists the layoffs are not directly tied to its heavy investments in artificial intelligence, they come at a time when the company is reshaping itself to embrace generative AI and improve operational efficiency. AWS, despite remaining a major revenue driver, has seen its growth slow. In Q1 2025, AWS posted $29.27 billion in sales—up 17% year-on-year but down from 18.9% growth in the previous quarter.

CEO Andy Jassy has been leading a long-term cost-cutting campaign since 2022, resulting in over 27,000 layoffs across Amazon’s corporate divisions. This year alone, the company has reduced headcount in its retail, communications, and devices segments. Last year, AWS also cut hundreds of roles in sales, marketing, and physical store tech.
