Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians by 24 runs in a low scoring game. Kolkata Knight Riders set a target of 170 runs for Mumbai Indians but MI got all out on 145 runs falling short by 24 runs of the target. SKY was the only batsman from Mumbai who looked to have kept the chase alive for MI.
Mumbai Indians started off their chase against KKR with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan opening the innings. Kishan (13) bowled by Mitchell Starc after he was hit for a four and a six of the previous two deliveries. Naman Dhir joined Rohit in the middle who was also cleaned up at 11 by Chakravarthy. Rohit Sharma was sent to the pavilion too by Sunil Narine at 11 runs. Mumbai Indians chase was further hindered by Tilak Verma’s wicket, by Chakravarthy at 4 runs with MI 61/4 in ninth over. Nehal Wadhera now goes back to pavilion on 6 runs, bowled by Narine. Hardik Pandya just scored 1 run before getting out on Russell. Suryakumar Yadav kept the chase alive with his steady batting. SKY brought up his 50 in just 30 balls at a time when MI were struggling to make runs. Surya got out on 56 as Russell gets the breakthrough for KKR. Tim David was the only batsman who looked a bit dangerous in the chase once SKY got out, but MI were bundled out at 145 by the KKR.
Earlier, in this crucial encounter, Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field, putting Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine took the crease as the opening pair for KKR, but their top order suffered a collapse akin to a house of cards. Salt's early dismissal for just 5 runs, courtesy of a breakthrough by Thushara, set the tone for KKR's batting woes. Thushara continued his dominance, claiming the wickets of Angkrish Raghuvanshi (13) and Shreyas Iyer (6) in quick succession during the third over.
Hardik Pandya's fifth over further compounded Knight Riders' troubles, as he dismissed Sunil Narine for a mere 8 runs. The crisis deepened for KKR when Rinku Singh (9) fell to a catch and bowl by Piyush Chawla. However, amidst the chaos, Manish Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer steadied the ship with a resilient 50-run partnership off 39 balls, pulling KKR out of the dire situation after losing five wickets.
Venkatesh Iyer showcased his prowess, reaching his half-century in just 36 balls. However, Manish Pandey's aggressive intent led to his downfall at 42 runs. Andre Russell's dismissal for 7, courtesy of a run-out, further hindered KKR's progress.
Subsequent dismissals of Ramandeep and Mitchell Starc added to KKR's woes, leaving them in danger of being bowled out before completing their allotted 20 overs. Despite the odds, Venkatesh Iyer valiantly fought against the MI bowling attack, crafting a brilliant innings of 70 runs off 52 balls. Knight Riders concluded their innings at 169 runs, all out, with just one ball remaining in their innings.
