Former BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad has asked the current team management to cease disturbing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, especially amid claims that the selectors want them to play local cricket to reinforce their commitment. The two stalwarts solely play the ODI format after retiring from Tests and T20Is. While Rohit has reached peak fitness losing over 10 kg in recent months, Kohli continues to set the norm with his exceptional fitness standards, demonstrating his willingness to go above and beyond to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Before the series opener against South Africa, sources stated that the selectors had urged the senior players to turn up for domestic cricket. But Kohli addressed the discussion with a brilliant century, while Rohit backed it up with a blistering fifty in Ranchi, putting an end to the speculation over their dedication.

Afterwards, Kohli even implied that playing cricket as a kind of preparation is not a method that suits him, saying, "I've never been a big believer of a lot of preparation, if that makes sense. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel mentally I can play the game, I work physically very hard every day of my life. It's got nothing to do with cricket anymore."
In response to the rising controversy surrounding senior players being asked to play domestic cricket, Prasad urged management to refrain from applying undue pressure and sending conflicting messages. He emphasized the need for clarity and gave a firm reminder about accountability and consistent communication, citing how similar issues were handled with MS Dhoni.
"One should be careful that the issue is not brought up all the time. We never had a word with Dhoni about playing domestic cricket. He played whenever he felt it was necessary. There should be clear communication up front. Or else, stick to the perform-or-perish policy. There should not be any scope for ambiguity," Prasad told Times of India.
Prasad cautioned against upsetting players who constantly perform and asked the management to treat great players like Kohli and Rohit with caution. Noting that their presence can motivate young cricketers on state teams, he continued, adding that domestic games should fit naturally into their schedules.
"First thing that needs to be ensured is that you shouldn't be messing with the minds of such big players. They are the ones who are performing, not the younger lot. It will be ideal if they play domestic cricket when they are not on national duty, because that will also inspire the young players in the state teams," he added.
