Scientists uncovered a marine crocodile ancestor in Egypt’s desert sands. This discovery changes the known timeline of crocodile family history. It reveals early evolution occurred earlier than scientists believed before.

Researchers identified a species named Wadisuchus kassabi recently. It represents earliest known member of crocodile group Dyrosauridae. It lived around 80 million years ago during Cretaceous times. Features include long snout and pointed sharp teeth used for hunting. Nostrils located a top snout show aquatic behaviour adaptations clearly.
Who made the discovery?
The research team came from Mansoura University Vertebrate Palaeontology Center. Lead author was palaeontologist Sara Saber from Assiut University. Senior author was Professor Hesham Sallam guiding research operations.
Researchers studied skull fragments and juvenile specimens carefully. They used CT scans for internal anatomical investigation. Scientists now call for protection of fossil-rich desert sites.

Fossils were discovered in Egypt’s Western Desert fossil beds. Material came from near Kharga and Baris oases centres. Rock layers preserved bones within sandstone and shale formations.
