NASA’s Perseverance rover made history by imaging comet 3I/ATLAS in the Martian sky. A faint streak of light was captured. This cosmic visitor’s trajectory matches all predictions for its solar system flyby. The event marks a first for Mars rovers observing interstellar objects directly.

The image was captured on October 4 with Right Navigation Camera (Navcam). The camera is located high on the rover's mast and aids in driving.

Who Found the Interstellar Comet?

The ATLAS survey telescope in Chile discovered comet 3I/ATLAS on 1 July 2025. After discovery, NASA’s Perseverance and orbiting telescopes quickly tracked the object. Both Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope joined ongoing observations. The comet’s hyperbolic orbit indicates it originated from beyond the solar system. The efforts of scientists continue as the comet passes through, leaving a scientific legacy.
