ISRO successfully completes third hot test of semicryogenic engine in Tamil Nadu

Sometimes, the future of space travel starts with fire. On Monday, ISRO took a fiery step forward with a three-second ignition that lit up more than just test chambers. The Indian space agency completed its third hot test of the Power Head Test Article (PHTA), part of its semi-cryogenic engine project, at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.

Focus on Engine Performance and Control

This was the third test in an important series. It is part of ISRO’s plan to validate key elements of its upcoming SE2000 engine. The engine, once ready, will power the SC120 semi-cryogenic stage. This will eventually replace the current L110 liquid core of the LVM3 launcher.

The latest test was conducted on 28 May 2025. It aimed to confirm the engine’s ignition sequence and improve integrated performance. The engine fired smoothly and reached 60 percent power during the short run. The burn remained steady and well-controlled throughout.
