Are we closer to reviving mammoths? Scientists create the first-ever woolly mouse with thick fur

A tiny mouse with mammoth-like traits may seem unusual. But for scientists, it is a step toward bringing back the woolly mammoth. Colossal Biosciences, a US-based company, has announced the successful creation of the Colossal Woolly Mouse, a genetically engineered mouse with features adapted for cold climates.

Mammoth Traits in a Mouse
Colossal Biosciences revealed that its researchers modified seven genes in mice. These genes are linked to thick fur, coat texture, and other adaptations seen in woolly mammoths. The company said the experiment confirms that key mammoth traits can be recreated in living animals.

The genetic changes were based on data from 59 mammoth genomes, some dating back 1.2 million years. Scientists also analysed a set of 121 elephant and mammoth genomes, including reference genomes for Asian and African elephants. They identified 10 genes responsible for hair length, colour, and fat metabolism, selecting seven for the experiment.
