This Sankashti is dedicated to Lord Vighnaraja Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of success. Worshipping Lord Vighnaraja on this day is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and fulfillment of desires. This year it will be observed on Wednesday, 10 September. As per the Hindu Panchang, this vrat falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month (Purnimanta Ashwina). According to Hindu legends, Lord Ganesha once appeared to destroy Vighnasura, a demon who troubled the gods and sages. Realizing Lord Ganesha’s supreme power, Vighnasura surrendered and asked for forgiveness. He requested that his name be forever associated with Ganesha. Accepting his wish, Lord Ganesha came to be known as Vighnaraja.
The Mudgal Purana also mentions that Lord Ganesha, in his Vighnaraja form, destroyed the demon Mamtasura. Another significant tale connects this vrat to the Dwapara Yuga, when Lord Krishna observed the fast on the advice of Sage Lomasha. By keeping the Vighnaraja Sankashti fast, Krishna defeated Banasura and rescued his grandson, Aniruddha.
