Artist Binoy Varghese’s moving paintings are an expression of his thoughts and concerns.
New Delhi-based artist Binoy Varghese paints contemporary figurative images that mirror society. His strong desire to travel and experience different cultures effortlessly translate into his work. He is inspired by socially relevant issues such as displacement, migration, sex trafficking and urbanization. Binoy faced many a hardships as a child; therefore, the protagonist in his paintings is often a young child with an innocent look. The accompanying picturesque depictions (reminiscent of his native place Koothattukulum in Kerala), act like a euphemism and make the alien locale appear more acceptable and adaptable. This imagery with its photo-like finish adorns a realistic look overlaid with a dreamy montage. Binoy’s multi-hued work is frequently driven by photography, cinema and digital media which he then articulates into meaningful metaphors. Binoy has been widely recognized for his efforts, including the National Award from the National Academy of Arts, New Delhi in 1998. Some of his exhibitions include Refugees at Aicon Gallery New York (2009), Multistories at Pallet Gallery, New Delhi (2008) and Home/Transit (2006) to name a few.
