EU leaders took a decisive step towards a comprehensive package to protect the euro at a summit on Friday, the European Union's monetary affairs commissioner said on Friday.

Olli Rehn also told a security conference in Munich that 2011 could become a year of reforms and revival for the euro. At a summit in Brussels on Friday, Germany and France proposed a competitiveness pact for Europe and EU leaders discussed strengthening a euro zone rescue fund, hoping to win back market confidence in the region's public finances.
