Subhash Runwal came to Mumbai with just Rs 100 in his pocket

Nearly everybody knows the story of how Shah Rukh Khan came to Mumbai with only Rs 1,500 in his pocket and went on to become one of Bollywood’s -- nay, India’s -- biggest success stories. Not many know that his neighbour Subhash Runwal’s life story has some interesting parallels with SRK’s own.

Today a real estate mogul and a billionaire, Subhash Runwal came to Mumbai in 1964 with just Rs 100 in his pocket. He is the founder and chairman of Runwal Group who found astonishing success only in his 30s.

Runwal’s stately Marine Mansion is a 10-storey structure that flanks Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat on Mumbai’s prime real estate – Bandra Bandstand. The mansion stands as an enduring testament to Runwal’s meteoric rise from his humble roots to a bona fide Forbes billionaire.

Born to a Marwari Jain family in Dhulia, a small town in Maharashtra, Runwal migrated to Mumbai at the age of 21. A graduate of Pune University, he completed his Chartered Accountancy in 1967, ranking fifth in India.
