The Sir M Visvesvaraya (SMVT) railway terminal in Bengaluru, which was previously lauded for its state-of-the-art, airport-like infrastructure, is now drawing attention for less favourable reasons. Recent social media footage highlighted the deteriorating conditions at India’s first fully air-conditioned railway station, with images showing the premises marred by gutka stains and other waste material.
The terminal, located in Bengaluru's Baiyappanahalli, was inaugurated in 2021 at a cost of Rs 314 crore to Indian Railways. Spanning 4,200 square metres, it was celebrated as a symbol of modernity and progress. However, the viral video, shared on X, revealed a different reality, showcasing the station’s surroundings littered with spit stains and garbage. The stark contrast between the station’s intended grandeur and its current state sparked widespread debate online.
The video soon went viral triggering a wave of responses from social media users. Some users placed the blame squarely on passengers, criticising their lack of civic sense and responsibility.
"When users believe in mediocrity, nothing will change," one user commented. Another user wrote, "We don't deserve any development."
"This should be fined, and that too heavy fines should be imposed on the culprits, disgusting," a third user remarked. "This is so sad," a fourth user added.
Other people criticised the government for failing to maintain the infrastructure. A user pointed out the significant costs incurred by Indian Railways in cleaning pan and gutka stains from public spaces, suggesting the need for innovative solutions like biodegradable spittoon pouches. He noted that these pouches, which contain seeds that can grow into plants, offer a dual benefit of cleanliness and environmental contribution.
"Why doesn't the government ban pan, gukta at least in public places. So infrastructure can remain good?" a user questioned.
Meanwhile, the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru is named after the eminent engineer and statesman Sir M Visvesvaraya. It is India's first centrally air-conditioned railway terminal, designed with modern amenities to handle increased passenger traffic. Spread across 4,200 square metres, the terminal has advanced facilities like LED lighting, spacious waiting areas, escalators, and digital information boards. It was developed to decongest existing stations in Bengaluru and serve as a major hub in the region. The station also features eco-friendly measures, including rainwater harvesting and solar power generation.
