Raghuram Rajan shut his alma mater IIT-Delhi for a day: 'Not my proudest moment'

Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan studied electrical engineering at IIT-Delhi from 1981 to 1985 and headed the student council.

Commenting on his experience with politics, Raghuram Rajan said he was fortunate to have gotten out of it.

Raghuram Rajan recently said that he had once shut down operations at his alma mater IIT-Delhi when he was involved in college politics. Terming it as not one of his proudest moments, the former RBI governor told Lallantop shared stories from his time at the premier institution when he contested an election.

"Election in IIT does not happen on the party basis, it happens on an individual basis," Rajan told the media house. "I became the Secretary of the English Debating Society. Then I became general secretary of the Students Affairs Council... that time, we also held a strike against the institute authority because scholarships were not given to Ph.D. students. So we shut the IIT for a day... Not my proudest moment."

Commenting on his experience with politics, Raghuram Rajan said he was fortunate to have gotten out of it. "I was involved in politics. Fortunately, I got out of it also," Business Today quoted him as saying.

The former RBI governor studied electrical engineering at IIT-Delhi from 1981 to 1985 and headed the student council. He then proceeded to do an MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
