Elon Musk said that he won "verbal" approval from the United States government for boring the world’s longest tunnel for an ultra-high-speed train line between Washington and New York City, reports Bloomberg.

For the maverick innovator, this materializes one of the many brainwaves he has often spoken about in the past. Last Thursday, he said that building a base on the moon could spur people to think more about space travel.

He believes that humans must colonise Mars: Tesla has repeatedly pointed out that humanity’s survival in future rests on it inhabiting other planets. A multi-planetary existence is the only way that humans can remain “extinction-proof”. In reply to the need to go to such lengths to save humanity, he said, "I think we have a duty to maintain the light of consciousness, to make sure it continues into the future."
