The Bengaluru traffic police seized a woman's scooter after 634 traffic violations resulting in unpaid fines worth more than Rs 3 lakh. The offenses were recorded since last year using the automatic Intelligent Traffic Management System camera.
The owner of the scooter has been identified as Mala, a graveyard worker, The Indian Express reported. Most of the violations recorded against Mala were for not wearing a helmet or for talking on the phone while riding the scooter. The latest offense was recorded on December 17.
Mala was reportedly unaware of the challans being issued against her vehicle until it amounted to Rs 3.25 lakh -- more than four times the showroom price of the scooter.
“We have issued a notice to the owner of the vehicle and only after paying a fine will we release the vehicle,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North traffic) Sachin Ghorpade told The Indian Express.
Once Mala came to know about the fines, her husband Dinesh approached the police and said that they would not be able to pay the huge fine and requested the police to release the scooter, the publication reported.
In a similar incident, a man in Bengaluru with 255 traffic violations was recently served a notice by the police to clear Rs 1.34 lakh in fines. But since the offender, Elumalai, paid only Rs 10,000 and settled 20 cases, the Bengaluru Traffic Police impounded his Suzuki Access scooter, Deccan Herald reported.
The man, a daily wage labourer, had accumulated the violations for over two years and the police managed to nab him after going through lists of offenders who have had more than 50 violations.
As per the Deccan Herald report, Elumalai, was unaware of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras installed near his house and had on multiple occasions over the past three years driven past the traffic cameras without wearing helmets.
