After multiple sightings of a leopard in the outskirts of Bengaluru, the forest department on Monday set up two cages to trap it after studying its movements. The move came after the leopard’s movement was caught in CCTV cameras near Kudlu Gate in the Electonic City area. Forest officials have asked people to stay vigilant.
A team of officials was assigned to track the leopard after the first sighting on Sunday, The Hindu reported.
“We have placed two cages near a stone quarry in Bharat Nagar to catch the leopard,” Bengaluru rural deputy conservator of forest (DCF) MK Ravindra told Hindustan Times. “We have formed teams for night patrolling and police personnel would also take part in the patrolling.”
Cameras have been put up to spot the leopard and officials said a team of 30 personnel and a drone were put into action to track and capture the wandering big cat.
But until it is captured, residents have been advised to take precautionary measures.“People will be advised to avoid late night and early morning walks. The leopard might have strayed into the residential areas in search of food," Ravindra told the publication.
Last weekend, videos of leopard sightings in the residential area of Bengaluru went viral on social media.
Footage captured from Cadenza Apartments in the area provides a clear view of the leopard casually strolling near the apartment complex, making its way onto a road adjacent to the Singasandra main road.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that a leopard has been sighted in Bengaluru. In February this year, a leopard ventured into the city's outskirts and killed a calf near an agricultural field in Dasanapura off Tumakuru Road.
According to reports, a total of four leopards were seen in and around the city in December 2022 as well.
