Though Samsung doesn't specifically mention square-shaped phones, the images for the patent do show off that design.
There will reportedly be a spring action metal layer at the end of the sliding display that will help alleviate problems with cracked panels due to contact with it, and the patent mentions that both OLED and LCD displays will be viable.

While the patent does show a smartphone, Samsung did not explicitly mention that the technology is only for phones, which means it could potentially show up on other devices with a display.
GizmoChina also reported about a new patent that Samsung filed in China, where it talks about "expandable screen for smartphones" and "smartphones in the shape of a watch".
