Samsung has shown off the world's first transparent Micro LED displays at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, at the Las Vegas convention centre.
The screens themselves look like transparent panes of glass with extremely small Micro LEDs embedded in them, using a precision manufacturing process that eliminates seams and light refractions. The process also allows for LED operation chip circuits to be directly embedded in glass.

This leads to an odd uncanny valley of images that appear as though they are holograms floating in mid-air.
According to Samsung, Micro LEDs have higher brightness values than transparent OLED panels, which means they are less impacted by natural ambient light. Samsung is betting heavily on its use in homes and B2B environments.

The problem is affordability. From Samsung's current non-transparent Micro LED offerings, the 110-inch panel launched in August last year, costs more than one crore in India. So it is going to take a while till the technology is more practically affordable.
Samsung says all the Micro LED displays have a modular design that will allow users, "to personalize the shape, size and ratio of screens to fit any space".
