A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda, the latter accepted the compliment and said that if it were not for Modi, he would have quit the Lok Sabha. Modi had earlier accused Congress President Rahul Gandhi of “insulting” Deve Gowda during one of his rallies in the state.
Deve Gowda said that he is still continuing his term in the lower house of the parliament because of Modi’s persuasion skills. Deve Gowda mentioned that he had vowed to resign in the case BJP wins the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, however Modi advised him against doing so asserting that the country needs “the experience and services of senior leaders”.
Although the former prime minister appreciated Modi’s gesture, he said it does not bury the hatchet between them. Deve Gowda said that he had met Modi on multiple occasions to discuss critical issues that the poll-bound state is facing, including the Mahadayi issue, but to no resolve; adding that “He listens, but does nothing”.
Deve Gowda promptly pointed out that the emergence of this sudden bonhomie between the former and the incumbent prime ministers was not indicative of an alliance in the case of a hung assembly in the Karnataka Assembly Polls scheduled for May 12.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, however, suggested that this camaraderie was of political nature and indicated a “tacit understanding” between the two parties.
