Day 1 of the winter session of the Parliament yesterday saw absolutely no transactions as the Government refused to discuss the issue of FDI. The much-sought-after Lokpal Bill will be on the agenda of the House today. N Ram, former editor-in-chief, Hindu speaks to CNBC-TV18 and tells what he expects from the session.
Ram predicts the winter session to be a "rough session" with FDI being the central issue. He also rules out any no-confidence motion against the Government. Below is the edited transcript of Ram's interview to CNBC-TV18. Q: Day one of the winter session was a damp squib, but in the next few days, do you see any major change in proceedings and business getting transacted?
A: I think it is going to be a rough session and the central issue is FDI in multi-brand retail and whether they can take a vote on it under rule 184. The BJP, Left and BJP’s allies will press with it because they want to show that the majority of members of the Lok Sabha are opposed to this and that is the objective. There is no question of over throwing the government through a no-confidence vote. They didn't have a number and nobody really wants to have General Elections now. So it is clear. It was a misjudgment by Trinamool Congress but that doesn’t make a huge difference.
