The UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has hiked rates for electricity for the first time in five years. Consumers are in for a shock this April as they would have to pay 1.24% more as January fuel surcharge, which will be added to April bills.
UP hikes power rates for first time in five years
"The surcharge stems from the revised multi-year tariff distribution regulation 2025, which now allows for a monthly fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge (FPPAS) to be recovered from consumers till 2029," a Hindustan Times report quoted people who are familiar with the update as saying.
With this update, the state's 3.45 crore electricity consumers will be affected, reports have said.
The power corporation has said that the fuel surcharge for January was calculated at Rs 78.99 crore. The corporation has said that the amount would be recovered from the consumers as part of their April electricity bills. This will lead to an additional charge of 1.24%.
UP consumers to pay more for electricity in April
UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad chairman Awadhesh Kumar Verma, while reacting to the change, called the amendment to the tariff regulations a "black law". "Discoms owe ₹33,122 crore to consumers as surplus, and there is no justification for raising charges under such circumstances," he said, while announcing that he would continue to protest against it.
Electricity consumer council does not support this power rate hike and its President Verma has said that UPPCL owes Rs 33,122 crore to the consumers. He also said that the UPPCL has increased the rates of electricity without paying consumers the money that it owes them.
