Republic Day 2022 Highlights: India is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day, the day its constitution came into force, today. The R-Day, falling in the 75th year of Independence, is being celebrated as 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' across the country. Several firsts were showcased during this year's Republic Day parade. It includes a grand fly-past of 75 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, cultural performances by 480 dancers selected through a competitive process, display of 10 scrolls each of 75 metres length, and installation of 10 large LED screens. The Republic Day Parade ceremony began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial. He led the nation in paying solemn tributes to the fallen heroes by laying a wreath. Thereafter, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries headed to the saluting dais at Rajpath to witness the parade. In the ceremony, holding amid the COVID-19 pandemic, only double vaccinated adults and one dose vaccinated children of 15 years and above were allowed to enter the parade, while children below 15 years of age were not permitted. All social distancing norms will be followed and wearing of mask was compulsory during the ceremony. The ceremony was concluded with a grand flypast by 75 aircraft over the Rajpath. In view of the ceremony, a heavy security cover has been deployed in Delhi. Over 27,000 police personnel have been deployed on Republic Day security duties in Delhi and anti-terror measures intensified. On the eve of Republic Day, the Centre announced the list of recipients of the Padma awards. President Ram Nath Kovind approved conferment of 128 Padma Awards this year, which included 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. Stay tuned for the latest development.

The Indian diaspora celebrated the 73rd Republic Day today amid COVID-19 restrictions, as several world leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, extended their greetings on the occasion, highlighting their strong friendship with India. Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal greeted people on the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day. Baijal also paid homage to martyrs and lauded Corona warriors for their efforts during the pandemic. "I pay tribute to all the freedom fighters and martyrs on this occasion and express gratitude specially towards Corona warriors lauding their efforts during the Covid pandemic," he tweeted.
Kejriwal hoisted the national flag at his residence, the Chief Minister's office said in a tweet. "The Constitution of India is the largest written Constitution in the world. This Constitution written by Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar covers the hopes and ambitions of each Indian. Many good wishes to all the citizen of the country on 73rd Republic day of the great Republic of India," Kejriwal said in a tweet.

The grand finale and the most keenly awaited segment of the parade, the Fly Past is on the display over Rajpath. As many as 75 aircraft/helicopters of the Indian Air Force are displaying a number of formations, as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. Vintage, as well as current modern aircraft/helicopters like Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, Mi-17, Sarang, Apache and Dakota,are displaying different formations, including Rahat, Meghna, Eklavya, Trishul, Tiranga, Vijay and Amrit.

In another first at Republic Day parade, Ministry of Defence in collaboration with Ministry of Education organized nationwide ‘Veer Gatha’ competition to motivate school students to do projects on gallantry award winners. More than eight lakh students from around 4,800 schools across the country participated and shared their inspirational stories through essays, poems, drawings and multimedia presentations. After several rounds of evaluation, 25 were selected and declared as winners. They will receive cash prize of Rs 10,000 and witness the R-Day parade.

A total of 480 dancers are performing during the cultural programme at the Republic Day parade. For the first time, these dancers have been selected through a nation-wide competition ‘Vande Bharatam’, jointly organised by Ministries of Defence and Culture. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) contingent led by Deputy Commandant HT Manjunath is marching past the saluting dais now. ‘Ready, Relevant and Responsive’, the ICG, in January 2021, undertook a major fire-fighting operation ‘Sagar Aaraksha-II’ in foreign waters, to douse a major fire onboard MV X-press Pearl off Sri Lanka. The ICG ships and aircraft relentlessly fought the fire for more than 150 hours and doused it successfully to avert a major ecological disaster in the region. The motto of the ICG is ‘Vayam Rakshamah’ meaning ‘We Protect’.

Ten huge scrolls depicting the valour and bravery of unsung heroes of freedom struggle were displayed along the Rajpath during the 73rd Republic Day parade. The scrolls, each of 75 metres in length and 15 ft in height, were prepared during the Kala Kumbh' event jointly organised by ministries of defence and culture. The scrolls were painted in two phases - at Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh - by over 600 renowned artists and young aspirants from across the country. Inspiration for the scrolls was drawn from the unsung heroes of the freedom struggle, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of indigenous and contemporary visual art practices.
