Mangaluru to get Water Metro on the lines of Kochi; 30 km in first phase

The Karnataka Maritime Board has decided to prepare a DPR for the 30-km priority section of the Mangaluru Water Metro Project, taking a leaf out of the Kochi model in neighbouring Kerala.

Karnataka’s coastal city Mangaluru is likely get a Water Metro on the lines of Kerala’s Kochi.

Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has decided to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP), which aims to connect isolated areas through an integrated water transport system. The transportation network will use National Waterways (NW) on both banks of the Nethravathi (NW-74) and Gurupura (NW-43) Rivers, extending from Bajal to Maravoor.

The project will be implemented in phases. Initially, a priority section will cover around 30 kilometres (km) along the Nethravathi-Gurupura River backwaters. The first phase will connect Bajal on the Nethravathi River to the Maravoor Bridge on the Gurupura River and will likely have 17 Metro stations.

“After Kochi, MWMP will be the second-largest water transport system. The idea is to enhance connectivity and create holistic development in the connected areas. This will improve livelihood opportunities and quality of life,” a KMB official told Moneycontrol.
