The COVID-19 caseload in Uttar Pradesh crossed the three-lakh mark on Saturday with 6,846 more people contracting the viral infection, while the death toll in the state reached 4,349.
Additional Chief Secretary Amit Mohan Prasad said active cases in the state went up to 67,955, while 2,33,527 patients have so far been discharged from hospitals following recovery.
The total count of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 3,05,831.
Prasad said the COVID-19 recovery rate in the state has gone up to 76.35 per cent while the case fatality rate presently stood at 1.42 per cent, which was lower than the national average.

Close contact with COVID-19 patients, and dining at restaurants and pubs, are associated with testing positive for the novel coronavirus infection, according to a study of outpatients from 11 US health care facilities.
According to the research, published in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report journal, adults who tested positive for the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 were nearly twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than those with negative test results.
To assess community and close contact exposures associated with COVID-19, the scientists, including those from the US National Institutes of Health, assessed the exposures reported by 154 adult case-patients, who were diagnosed usingRT-PCRtests, and compared these with data from 160 control-participants who showed symptoms, but had negative test results.
"Case-patients were more likely to have reported dining at a restaurant (any area designated by the restaurant, including indoor, patio, and outdoor seating) in the 2 weeks preceding illness onset than were control-participants," the study noted.

Hospitals in the United States have turned down about a third of their allocated supplies of the COVID-19 drug remdesivir since July as need for the costly antiviral wanes, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed.
Some hospitals said they are still buying the Gilead Sciences medicine to build inventory in case the pandemic accelerates over the winter. But they said current supplies are adequate, in part because they are limiting use to severely ill patients.

Canada has reported zero COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours for the first time since March 15, according to public health agency’s data. Canada's death toll from the pandemic stood at 9,163 yesterday, the same as the number of the deaths reported on September 10, government data showed.

United States drugmaker Merck & Co Inc has begun recruiting participants to its early-stage COVID-19 vaccine study, according to the government database clinicaltrials.gov.
The phase 1/2 trial, which is based in Belgium, aims to recruit 260 healthy participants to test the experimental vaccine V591, which it gained access to as part of its May deal for Austrian vaccine maker Themis Bioscience.

Union Health Secretary yesterday held a video conference to review COVID-19 management strategies and actions taken by the eight Northeast states that account for less than five percent of total active cases in India. The conference was attended by the principal secretaries, health secretaries, and other representatives from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
Among these states, Assam currently has the highest number of active cases at 29,690 and constitutes 68 percent of the total active cases in these eight states. Tripura comes next with 7,383 active coronavirus cases, which is 17 percent of the total active cases in the northeast.

This comes on a day when Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that in view of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) warning that COVID-19 cases will be on the rise in coming days, the state government has decided to provide 80 percent oxygen cylinders to hospitals and 20 percent to industries.

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution on tackling the coronavirus pandemic over objections from the United States and Israel, which protested a successful last-minute Cuban amendment that strongly urges countries to oppose unilateral economic, financial or trade sanctions.
