Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday tore into Congress over its handling of the situation post the 26/11 terror attacks and said it "should tell the nation who prevented India’s military response after the 26/11 Mumbai attack".
After inaugurating the Navi Mumbai airport, PM Modi addressed an event and said, "...Mumbai is not only the economic capital city but also one of the most vibrant cities in India. This is the reason terrorists attacked Mumbai in 2008. But the then Congress government gave a message of weakness. Recently, a senior Congress leader and former Home Minister has revealed that after the Mumbai attacks, our security forces were ready to attack Pakistan, but due to pressure from another country, the Congress government at the time stopped our security forces."
Questioning who prevented military's response, PM Modi said, "Congress needs to tell who made the decision under pressure from a foreign power. The country has all right to know. Congress's weakness strengthened the terrorists. The country repeatedly has had to pay for this mistake by sacrificing lives."
"For us, nothing is more important than national security and the safety of our citizens," PM Modi said, referring to Operation Sindoor launched after the Pahalgam terror attack.
P Chidambaram's remarks
PM Modi's reaction come after a recent comment made by former Home Minister P Chidambaram during an interview. He admitted that the then UPA government decided to not retaliate against Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks due to international pressure, including the United States.
The Congress leader said though “retribution crossed my mind", the government decided to not take military action, according to a report by News18.
Chidambaram, the Home Minister in the then-ruling Congress-led UPA government, told a Hindi news channel "the whole world descended on Delhi to tell us 'don't start a war'".
The admission was pounced on by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which was heavily criticised by the opposition, including the Congress, after the Operation Sindoor ceasefire; this was after US President Donald Trump claimed he told Delhi and Islamabad to stop fighting, and they listened.
Op Sindoor was India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. It involved precision air strikes on nine terrorist camps and bases in Pak and Pak-occupied Kashmir. Pak responded with missile and drone strikes, triggering an intense period of conflict.
