Sharekhan has come out with a report on Rail Budget 2011-12.
Rail Budget 2011-12; a socialist budget: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presented her third budget, as part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)- led government, in the Parliament today. As expected there was no hike in the freight rate. Hence there has been no increase in the freight burden of the companies that have relatively greater dependence on the railways for movement of raw materials and finished goods, such as steel, cement, fertilisers, power (coal) and mining. The railway budget also focused on enhancing the rail infrastructure and positively surprised by announcing an outlay of Rs57,630 crore for the same.Performance review for 2010-11:
- Traffic receipts were pegged at Rs 94,840 crore, which is largely in line with the budgeted target of Rs 94,765 crore.
- Freight loading for the fiscal was pegged at 924 million tonne, which is slightly lower than the freight loading target of 944 million tonne.
- Cash surplus before dividend came in at Rs 9,023 crore, which is lower compared with the budgeted target of Rs 9,782 crore primarily due to overruns in working expenses. The working expenses were higher due to an increased expenditure on account of the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission
