Many lessons can be learnt from the failures of large companies in this area. There have been cases where companies faced challenges or failures due to various reasons.
It's important to note that the failure of automated L&D efforts is often a result of poor implementation, lack of alignment with organisational goals or other contextual factors rather than a fundamental flaw in the concept.
IBM introduced Watson, its AI-powered platform, for corporate L&D. Despite significant investments, IBM's employees reportedly found the system to be overwhelming and difficult to use. The platform struggled to provide meaningful and relevant content recommendations, leading to dissatisfaction among employees.
Clearly, it is critical to be user-friendly, and constant fine-tuning is a must.

The system faced widespread issues, including incorrect payroll calculations, difficulties in tracking employee performance and inadequate support for L&D initiatives. This highlights the need for thorough testing, user training and robust support mechanisms when implementing.
Embracing AI in learning and development offers SMEs the potential to enhance employee skills, boost productivity and stay competitive. However, it is crucial to navigate the potential pitfalls discussed above carefully.
