It pays to be self-employed in Goa, salaried in Chandigarh

Urban India’s gender income gap varied across states. Haryana stood out, with women’s earnings surpassing double the national average. On the other hand, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal had the highest income disparity, with women earning around half of men’s monthly income.

Women are better of in Goa and Chandigarh when it comes to self employment

Holidayers’ paradise Goa has also emerged as a haven for the self-employed. Gross monthly earnings in urban areas of the state were double the national average in 2023-24, according to a Moneycontrol analysis of periodic labour force survey data.

A self-employed person in urban Goa earned Rs 44,274 compared with the national average of Rs 20,413. A self-employed person in Chandigarh earned Rs 42,237, and in Delhi earned Rs 29,782 per month.

Among the larger states, women in urban Haryana earned more than twice the national average, while urban males were better off in Maharashtra, Haryana and Karnataka than any other state.
