Congress' worst nightmare has come true, with just one victory in the five states that went to the polls.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party has registered its biggest win since 1985. The Samajwadi Party has managed to get a majority with over 220 seats. In Punjab, the Akali's have also created history becoming the first ruling coalition ever to beat anti-incumbency and retain power in the state. The BJP swept Goa, managing to get a comfortable majority in the 40 seat assembly. But the mandate is much more mixed in Uttarakhand with the Congress and the BJP in an neck and neck fight, in fact the Chief Minister BC Khanduri has lost the election there. The only consolation for the Congress is Manipur where the ruling party is all set to return to power.
