It is the season of strawberries, and what better way to enjoy them than growing them in your own home garden? It isn’t an uphill task, as strawberries don’t occupy a lot of space. They can  be raised in containers, but they must be placed in areas that get plenty of sunlight. Here are some easy steps to follow:

Selecting the right variety

For winters, it’s best to choose varieties such as Sweet Charlie, Camarosa, and Winter Dawn. They tolerate colder temperatures better and grow well in pots. Choosing the right variety determines the health of your produce, and it’s something you should consider beforehand.

Choosing the right pots and soil

For any variety to grow properly, it needs enough space. Hence, pots that are about 10 to 12 inches deep work well. Ensure they have several drainage holes for excess water to escape. This helps prevent the roots from rotting.

Soil and water requirement

Strawberries grow well in soil that drains well and contains enough organic matter. A combination of potting soil, cocopeat, and compost provides the right balance: it holds enough moisture for the plants without allowing water to sit in the pot, which is especially important in winter when the soil remains wet for longer.

Ideal light conditions

For healthy growth, strawberries need sunlight for at least 5-6 hours every day.  Hence, they should be positioned in a way that increases their light exposure. In case of limited sunlight, rotate the pots or use reflective surfaces.

Watering the pots

Overwatering should be avoided as it can lead to root rot and other fungal issues in winter. Wait for the top layer to dry a little before re-watering. Ensure the soil is moist, well-drained, and not wet.

Fertilisation

To support root growth, it’s best to use a mild, balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during winter. Avoid high-nitrogen options as they create softer leaves, that may not survive the cold. What works well for container strawberries are compost tea or diluted organic liquid fertilisers.

How to protect them?

In winter, strawberries may need a little extra care to protect them from damage and support better growth. They can be placed in containers close to a wall, wrapped in burlap, or covered with much around the base. Protecting them from winter winds also helps in having healthier growth.
