Ramzan
Ramzan or Ramadan, is the ninth month as per the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts for about 29 -30 days- this year approximately from March 11 or 12 to April 11. Ramadan originates from the Arabic word 'Al Ramad', which means intense heat and the dryness that follows, as the first Ramadan fell during the summer.
Roza
Roza in Urdu, which is originally Persian, is derived from the word ‘roz’ meaning, daily. The original Arabic word in the Qur'an for roza or fasting is sawm, which means abstaining from all things that are forbidden during fasting and is one of the five pillars of Islam. Fasts or rozas, are thus observed during the Holy month of Ramzan.
Suhoor or Sehri
This refers to the pre-dawn meal or meal before sunrise, before the fast for the day begins. The first sehri on March 11th or 12th, is likely to be around 5.13 am. Suhoor in Arabic or sehri, originates from the Arabic word seher, meaning the last third of the night. Traditionally, across the Muslim world, the meal eaten at sehri, aims to provide nourishment and energy for the day. Although, suhoor should be substantial, it is important not to overindulge.
Iftar
This means, the meal eaten at sunset to break one’s fast. It is usually done by eating a date and drinking a glass of water. It is believed, according to legend, that even Prophet Mohammed broke his fast with dates- he had three dates and some water. Breaking one’s fast with dates helps, as these are a source of natural sugar, vitamins, and minerals that aid in combating the fatigue, experienced owing to fasting.
The first Iftar on March 11th or 12th is approximately at 6.26 pm.
Iftar is said to bring blessings, especially for those that make arrangements for Iftar for others.
