Ramadan originates from the Arabic word 'Al Ramad', which means intense heat and the dryness that follows, as the first Ramadan fell during the summer.

Roza

Roza in Urdu, which is originally Persian, is derived from the word ‘roz’ meaning, daily. The original Arabic word in the Qur'an for roza or fasting is sawm, which means abstaining from all things that are forbidden during fasting and is one of the five pillars of Islam. Fasts or rozas, are thus observed during the Holy month of Ramzan.
