Modern research shows that rosemary oil may help increase blood flow to the scalp, which can stimulate hair follicles and promote grow. A PubMed study found Rosemary oil matched the effectiveness of 2 percent monoxide after six months in treating androgenetic alopecia. The trial of 100 participants revealed similar hair count increases in both groups by month six, though rosemary caused less scalp irritation. The oil also helps to repair nerve and tissue damage in the scalp.

In Ayurveda, rosemary has long been used to treat scalp imbalances. It’s believed to energise the nervous system, boost memory and stimulate blood circulation, all of which are important for hair nourishment. Combined with warming oils like sesame or coconut, rosemary is traditionally used in head massages to calm the mind  and strengthen the hair roots.
