Salman Khan, one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, has always managed to maintain a certain image on screen — one that has consciously avoided intimate scenes, especially kissing. However, during his candid appearance on Aap Ki Adalat in 2012, the actor spoke in detail about the only time he came close to doing a kissing scene — with actress Bhagyashree in the iconic 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya.

Salman recounted the moment with a blend of nostalgia and humour. “Mujhe kissing se koi khushi prapt nahi hoti. Hamara wo proper kissing scene tha, but Bhagyashree ne mana karr diya aur maine mana karr diya. Jo glass ke ek dusre ke tarafff hum jo kiss karte hai wo kissing tha darasal. Sooraj Barjatiya ko, Rajshri ko, mujhe, aur Bhagyashree ko bhi iss film ki kaafi jarurat thi, Aur phir bhi humne kaha ki aisa kuch karna hai jo screen pe thoda decent lage,” he said, revealing how both he and Bhagyashree were hesitant about performing an actual kiss on screen. The solution? A symbolic and clever moment that went on to become one of the most memorable scenes in Bollywood.

Rather than indulging in a traditional kiss, Salman was shown kissing Bhagyashree’s lipstick mark on a mirror. “I kissed the lipstick on the mirror. That was our kiss. And I still believe it’s the best kissing scene in the history of Indian cinema,” Salman declared proudly. This act not only respected Bhagyashree’s comfort level but also reinforced Salman’s personal beliefs regarding on-screen intimacy.
When asked why he’s never kissed a co-star in any of his films since, Salman offered a philosophical and somewhat traditional take. “If I do a kiss scene in a film, then other filmmakers will also demand the same. Then where do we draw the line?” he explained. He further added, “No script in the world is so convincing that it justifies a kissing scene. If the girl is playing my girlfriend or wife in the film, then why should anyone else watch us kiss? That’s personal.”
