National Award-winning actor-director Rishab Shetty, best known for his blockbuster Kantara, has found himself in the middle of a language row. At the Telugu pre-release event of Kantara: Chapter 1 in Hyderabad, Shetty chose to deliver his speech in Kannada. While the decision was personal, he explained that he wanted to speak from his heart in his native tongue, it sparked criticism from several Telugu-speaking fans who expected him to address them in their own language.

The event, held ahead of the film’s October 2 release, was meant to connect with the Telugu audience, given that the movie has been dubbed and promoted heavily across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. However, a section of fans took to social media to voice their disappointment, arguing that speaking in Telugu, or at least offering a greeting in the local language, would have shown greater respect. One user remarked, “When you are promoting your film in Telugu, make an attempt to speak in Telugu,” echoing the general sentiment.

Clips from the event circulated widely, with some users even calling for a boycott of the film. Tweets criticized Rishab Shetty for “taking the audience for granted” and for not acknowledging the cultural significance of the language at a promotional event.

That said, the reactions were far from one-sided. Many supporters defended Rishab Shetty, noting that not every actor can speak multiple languages fluently. They pointed out that his choice to stick to Kannada came from a place of authenticity. “He wanted to speak wholeheartedly about his bond with Jr NTR and his fans’ love. That’s why he chose Kannada,” one fan wrote.
