Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran are gearing up for their upcoming political action thriller, L2: Empuraan. The actors are promoting the film widely ahead of its worldwide release. However, Mohanlal and Prithviraj have recently revealed that they didn’t charge a penny to star in the film.
L2: Empuraan is said to be one of the most expensive Malayalam films in the history of Mollywood and Mohanlal and Prithviraj made sure to make the film even grand.
In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Prithviraj noted that when he started casting for Empuraan, he had some big names in mind. He was able to contact most of the actors from the US, UK, China, and other countries.
However, he was left surprised that many of these actors were interested in collaborating with an Indian film like Empuraan. Prithviraj added after the mutual agreements, agents got involved, seeking high payments for the talents, which is not feasible for Malayalam cinema.
Prithviraj noted, “Every little penny I have, I wanted to put it into the making of Empuraan. Mohanlal hasn’t taken a single rupee for the film.”
The filmmaker further revealed, "Mohanlal has not taken a single rupee to do Empuraan, which is why this film could be made, adding, “Whatever money we spent will be seen on the screen.”
Prithviraj further stated that Empuraan was not a big-budget film with excessive spending on remunerations. He explained that the entire team, including technicians and actors, were aware that they were working on something unique and therefore contributed accordingly.
He added, “Even the foreign actors understood. People like Jerome, Andrea acted in Empuraan as a favour.”
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, L2: Empuraan is the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. The film features an ensemble cast including Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The film also features international stars like Jerome Flynn, Andrea Tivadar, and Eriq Ebouaney.
