The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) hosted a second edition of MAMI Select: Filmed on iPhone at PVR: Lido, Juhu in Mumbai last night. The event premiered four exceptional short films, with each showcasing extraordinary artistic excellence and technological innovation.
Four talented new filmmakers, Amrita Bagchi, Rohin Raveendran Nair, Chanakya Vyas and Shalini Vijayakumar, premiered their short films, each representing a distinct Indian language and culture.
The filmmakers were chosen from many applicants and received assistance, including iPhones and laptops, to make their films. They were also guided by experienced industry professionals.
However, the event was notably attended by some of the prominent industry professionals, including Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, A.R. Rahman, Disha Patani, Neha Dhupia, Sonakshi Sinha, Zaheer Iqbal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth.
Dhvani Bhanushali, Raveena Tandon, Zoya Akhtar, Shakti and Mukti Mohan, Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Tisca Chopra, Adarsh Gourav, Kabir Khan and Mini Mathur were among other celebrities who graced the red carpet event.
The short films range from 20 to 40 minutes and are available to watch worldwide on the official YouTube Channel of MAMI.
Meanwhile, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Festival Director of MAMI, has shared in the official statement that the success of the second edition of the event marked a significant moment in Indian independent cinema. He also noted that four talented filmmakers had pushed the boundaries of storytelling, demonstrating that impactful narratives can be created beyond traditional production methods.
He added, “Each selected film—whether it's exploring the haunting legacy of colonial India, the poetry of obsolescence, the innocence of childhood, or the complexities of traditional family dynamics—demonstrates the powerful intersection of accessible technology and artistic vision.”

Tinctoria (Hindi)
Directed by Amrita Bagchi, Tinctoria explores the connection between fashion connection to history. It follows a fashion designer launching her collection in an old fort. The film brings up the past struggles of indigo farmers, who were exploited, and shows how their stories are still relevant today through fashion.
Kovarty (Malayalam)
Rohin Raveendran Nair's film is set against the backdrop of Kerala's beautiful backwaters and revolves around a typewriter that explores how technology and human relationships change over time. The film shows how society is transforming through the use of the bond between the typewriter and a village typist.
Mangya (Marathi)
Chanakya Vyas’ directorial Mangya explores the life of a young boy who tries to save his pet rooster when the government orders the culling of birds. The emotional story about childhood attachment and the clash between personal feelings and public rules leaves the audience in tears.
Seeing Red (Tamil)
Shalini Vijayakumar's film explores women's roles in traditional Indian families through a story about a ghost. The film revolves around three women who see the ghost, and shows how women are treated in society.
