In the golden era of 90s Bollywood, the actor-director duo of Govinda and David Dhawan delivered a string of box-office hits that redefined the comedy genre. Films like Coolie No. 1 (1995), Hero No. 1 (1997), and Partner (2007) cemented their status as one of the most successful collaborations in Hindi cinema. However, behind the laughter and success was a rift that quietly grew over time, leading to an extended period of silence between the two.

The fallout reportedly began after the release of Partner in 2007, when Govinda felt sidelined in the project and claimed he was not approached again for future collaborations. In a 2017 interview, Govinda said, "I was loyal to David Dhawan for 17-18 years. I did not sign any film without informing him. But after a point, I was not even invited to his son’s debut." The actor was referring to Varun Dhawan’s entry into Bollywood with Student of the Year (2012), a film David Dhawan actively promoted.

Govinda also expressed disappointment over the lack of acknowledgment for his contribution to their success. "I made no noise about it, but yes, I was hurt," he said in another interview. These statements pointed to a deep sense of betrayal and emotional distance between the two.
