Sanjay Dutt’s long-discussed connection with weapons has once again sparked debate online after a fresh revelation from Ujjwal Nikam, the public prosecutor in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. Nikam’s comments, made during an interview with journalist Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, have reignited public curiosity about the actor’s past and the legal storm that once surrounded him.
Ujjwal Nikam recalled the events that led to Sanjay Dutt’s involvement in one of India’s darkest chapters.
“Personally, I believe that he was crazy about weapons. That’s why he had one AK-56 rifle. But before the blasts, Abu Salem brought one tempo full of weapons and Sanjay saw it. He kept one rifle for himself and returned the rest. He was also imprisoned for seven years under the Arms Act,” said Ujjwal Nikam.
The 66-year-old actor, known for his powerful performances in films like Vaastav, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., and Agneepath, was accused of illegally possessing arms supplied by individuals linked to the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Although Sanjay Dutt was eventually cleared of all charges related to the bombings in 2007, he was sentenced to six years in prison for illegal possession of weapons.
Ujjwal Nikam elaborated further on how things might have unfolded differently had Sajay Dutt acted otherwise.
“When they came to him with a tempo full of weapons… if he had informed the police about it, then the police would have followed it up. They would have apprehended the accused,” he said.
“Sanjay didn’t know that the blast was going to happen, but even if he had informed that these weapons came in—and they had RDX, hand grenades—then the police would have investigated and stopped the blasts.”
The prosecutor’s remarks shed light not only on Sanjay Dutt’s personal fascination with firearms but also on how a single decision could have altered the course of history. Sanjay Dutt’s case, which went on for over a decade, became one of the most sensational legal sagas in Indian entertainment history, drawing sharp public and media attention
After years of court proceedings and public scrutiny, Sanjay Dutt completed his sentence in 2016. Since his release, he has largely kept away from controversy, focusing instead on his film career and family life. Still, every time his past is revisited, it reminds India of a turbulent era that blurred the line between reel and real, celebrity and citizen, glamour and guilt.
