Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued an emotional apology on social media after one of his comments sparked intense backlash, culminating in threats to his family and colleagues. The controversy began when Kashyap responded to criticism regarding the film Phule, a biopic based on social reformer Jyotirao Phule.
In a heated exchange with a social media user, his remark — “I would urinate on Brahmins, any problem?” — went viral and led to the filing of an FIR in Mumbai. The comment, many claimed, was offensive to the Brahmin community and incited widespread outrage.
Taking to Instagram, Kashyap clarified that his apology wasn’t for his post itself, but for a particular line that had been taken out of context and triggered a wave of hate. “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (tradition),” he wrote.
He further continued in Hindi, maintaining his stance while appealing for the safety of his loved ones. “I won't take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn't say anything. If you want an apology, here it is. Brahmins, spare the women. These values are imbibed in our scriptures, too, except for Manuwaad. Decide which Brahmin you are. Rest, here's an apology from me,” he added.
The furore began after a user commented, “Brahmins are your fathers. The more you mess with them, the more they will burn you,” to which Kashyap had given his now-infamous reply. He also shared the screenshot of this exchange publicly.
A police complaint has also been lodged in Mumbai by a Bombay High Court advocate.
The backlash against Mr Kashyap’s remark arises alongside the ongoing controversy surrounding the film Phule, which stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha. The biopic centres on the lives of renowned 19th-century social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, who were pioneers in challenging caste discrimination and championing gender equality.
Phule, directed by Ananth Mahadevan, was initially slated for release on April 11 but was postponed following protests from Brahmin groups. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded several edits, particularly involving caste references. The film is now scheduled to release on April 25 after complying with the required changes.
