The Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 16 announced that the assembly poll in Andhra Pradesh will be held on May 13. The Gazette notification for the elections will be issued on March 20, and the deadline for withdrawal of nominations will be April 25. Vote counting will take place on June 4.
The tenure of the Andhra Pradesh assembly, along with those of Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, ends in June. As the term of the Lok Sabha ends on June 16 this year, the elections for these states are being conducted concurrently with the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

In 2019 Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) secured a significant victory by winning 151 out of the total 175 seats, while the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) managed to secure only 23 seats. In contrast, the 2014 assembly election, held immediately after the formation of a separate Telangana state from the united Andhra Pradesh, saw the TDP and the BJP, supported by JanaSena, winning 103 out of the 175 seats and subsequently forming the government.

However, the 2024 battle for the state assembly is expected to be a tough contest between the ruling YSRCP and the triangular alliance of the TDP, the BJP, and the JanaSena Party. The YSRCP is banking on its extensive welfare schemes, while the opposition alliance is confident of replicating its successful 2014 performance.
The BJP has finalised its alliance with the TDP and JanaSena for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, putting an end to days of uncertainty and marking the return of the TDP to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after six years.
As part of the alliance agreement, the three parties have agreed to contest both the Lok Sabha elections and the state assembly elections together.
Just hours prior to the official announcement by the poll panel, the YSRCP rolled out its list of candidates for both the Lok Sabha and state assembly polls. The list comprises 25 candidates for Lok Sabha seats and 175 candidates for assembly seats in the state.
In the 2019 elections, the TDP, BJP, and JanaSena contested separately, resulting in a landslide victory for the YSRCP. The saffron party, meanwhile, faced a setback in both the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, failing to secure any seats and only managing a vote share of 0.9 percent.
